What is demo Lab south?

The Democracy Lab South, or Demo Lab South, is a movement incubation hub that builds power, strategy, and infrastructure with and for QTGNC and BIPOC-led, community-based projects and organizations throughout the South.

Through this work, We envision a Southern movement ecosystem where QTGNC and BIPOC leadership and brilliance thrive.

OUR values

The principles and beliefs that guide how we move

1 | We work in ways that are intersectional, liberatory, and community-oriented.

4 | We work towards radical and strategic interdependence, mutual aid, and accountability.

3 | We believe in social movements led by and for Southern QTGNC and BIPOC communities and their descendants.

2 | We believe in equitably resourcing communities.

Our work falls into three primary categories:

Story

new leaders, new voices, New South.

We work with our partners, key organizations and leaders in the south, to co-create leadership development models for communities across the region. We Aim to Empower community members - particularly bipoc women, femme, queer, and trans leaders - to share a new southern Narrative and build political power for a regional Movement.

structure

Connecting, resourcing, and coaching our people.

We work with our partners to strengthen Southern movement infrastructure by identifying major needs and gaps, and offering support through 1) connecting partners for grassroots mentorship and collective learning; 2) Sub-granting and resource supplementation; and 3) coaching, training and technical assistance.

Strategy

building collective vision, movement, and power.

We support mutual movement building by 1) bringing together our partners and other Southern leaders to collaboratively design methods that strengthen movement structure and strategy; and 2) implementing shared campaigns and actions that advance movements for justice and liberation.

Our goal is to build movement power in four areas :

Network | Power to develop, maintain, and leverage relationships with people and institutions with influence over and access to critical social, cultural, or financial resources.

People | Power to build, mobilize, and sustain large-scale public support.

Narrative | Power to transform and hold public narratives and ideologies and limit the influence of opposing narratives.

Institutions | Power to influence the who, how, and what of decision making.
